Memorial Day 2016

Monday, May 30th-

Happy Memorial Day! This year we decide to try to visit all the direct relatives we have in the closest 3 cemeteries to us. There are actually quite of few. We couldn't find two: William T. Morris, father of Cora May Morris and Matilda Thompson Bleak. They are both in St. George and we were pretty spent by that point. We are going to try to find them next time we are in St. George.

I also just realized that we did find Daniel Matheson and Catherine Treasurer Matheson but I don't have a photo. I need to check Silas's phone, I guess.

For lunch we spent a few hours at the Stonely's. They were very gracious and had several families over. We had yummy food and good conversation. The kids enjoyed playing with all the kids that were there. I even had a ride on the Stonely's Segway, which was awesome.

So, here are the pictures from our cemetery hopping. I uploaded them in order which pushes the earliest photo to the bottom, which is why the first photos on this post are from the evening visit.

May 28 & 29

Saturday, May 28th-

First Saturday of summer! We started a new chore chart today. Before the kids were alternating through a list of chores but I'm going to try something new. I am giving each kid 3 daily chores and one weekly chore. Cleod and Ryan both agreed that it will be hard at first but I'm the long run it will be easier to keep things clean. For example, Cleod has clean room every day. Their room can be a big mess but if he chips away at it for the next week and then works on keeping it clean, I think he will appreciate it more. It seemed to go well today but we will see how it works next week.

This afternoon, Silas and I took Ryan on a date to Applebee's. He is a funny kid. He was telling us all kinds of stuff about the presidential election that he heard from school. Oh, to be that innocent again and not have the fear for our country that many of the adults do right now.

Ryan was very grateful for the date and easy-going. His personality is sometimes a paradox to me. He can be so calm and easy-going but he is also the most abrupt when he's upset. He can be very generous and kind and then selfish. I guess we are all like that sometimes. Some moments we are kind and other moments our flaws show through too much.

I'm grateful we were able to have Some alone time with him though.

We got home and I ran quickly with Molly to try to find her a dress. We are having our family pictures taken on Tuesday and I just needed something for Molly. We found something but in the meantime she was quite the diva. She wanted to try everything and buy everything. It was silly and ridiculous. She made me laugh and made me mad a couple of times too. She is quite a character.

When we got home the Warby's were at our house. We watched their kids tonight because it is their 12th anniversary. We haven't had their kids over for a while since we have both been leaving our kids more while we go on dates, but tonight they wanted to go on a date without Tamina. It was really fun to have them over. We had pancakes for dinner and then went over to the elementary school to play. The sprinklers came on while we were there so some of the kids got soaking wet...and cold. Cleod held Tamina most of the walk home. She was really good for us. All the kids had fun and were good.

Sunday, May 29th-

Today was a successful sacrament meeting. The girls were a little quieter than normal and the boys were very well behaved so I felt like I could sort of listen to the talks. Silas was gone more of the day than normal due tonight but when he finally got home we decided to watch The Princess Bride with kids. It is such a great movie and it was nice to sit with Silas after a long day without him. I feel like we are getting semi-adjusted. The kids are still doing some weird things that might be because of Silas's calling but over all we are doing better and I am less stressed. For a while, before Silas was called as Bishop, I could leave in the evening without feeling badly and Silas would put the kids to bed a couple times a week without me, whether it was for Grandma Warby stuff or Relief Society or a girl's night. Since the changes, I haven't left as much in the evening and adjusting back to dealing with the kids more consistently was hard. It sounds dumb because I'm their mom and I know how to take care of them...but having a night or two a week when I didn't have to pester them about getting their teeth brushed really helped my sanity. So I think that I sacrificed some of that sanity the first month Silas was Bishop and am regaining it as time goes by. Today helped me to see that I am doing better in the adjustment process because although we missed not having Silas with us from 7:30am to 7pm, I wasn't sad that he was gone. I didn't text him as often as I have or wonder what he was doing or if he was ok (he doesn't eat as much these days and sometimes gets headaches as a result). It just felt normal for him to be gone and for me to do my thing with the kids. And I think that's ok.

Last day of school!

Friday, May 27th-

Last day of school
LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! I may be more excited than the kids. Although I have 5 kids and they can be a lot to handle, I LOVE having my kids home. I love not rushing to get the kids to bed. I love letting them read whatever they want. I love letting them sleep in when they want (they are still young so sleeping in means 8:30am). I love knowing where they are and what they are doing. I love having them home. I love playing at the park and going to story time.

The weird thing about today is that it was Cleod's last day of elementary school. That is both exciting and sad.

Happy boy, now a 6th grader!
Cleod after school today. Ready to read the summer away!

May 25 & 26

Wednesday, May 25th-

After school we started our weekly paper route. I want the boys to be comfortable with the route and I want to help them know what they need to do to be safe so I followed them around in the van today. I will next week too. After that we will see if the 2 older boys can do it solo. They have a little over 100 houses and it's in a nice area of town so it should be great. They are really excited to earn their own money and I am excited for them to start learning about managing money.

Thursday, May 26th-

This was a great and awful day. This morning the girls and I woke up Grandma which was good. My visiting teachers came over which was also good. I made little cheesecakes for Natalie's graduation party which we went to tonight. Good things.

But I was a little anxious in the afternoon and evening and wasn't sure why. It would have been fine except some dumb stuff happened which made me feel a little more...anxious.

Silas made raspberry syrup tonight out of fresh raspberries so we could have it over the cheesecakes. Cora spilled a lot of the syrup in the van when we pulled up to Natalie's house. I may have raised my voice...and cried.

Then we got the cheesecakes in the freezer to keep until after dinner and when I opened the freezer to get them out a third of them were squished by the shelf, drawer thing above where I set them. Awesome.

I hate when all my time and effort gets destroyed. It feels like that is always the case in motherhood. You sweep and mop and the kids come in 5 minutes later with muddy shoes. You wash all the dishes and then after one meal the sink is full. You spend HOURS sorting, washing, drying, folding and putting away laundry to have your kids wear them for a few hours and then throw them all over the floor, which you may or may not have just cleaned. Let's not get my started on bathrooms...

Most days I recognize that this is how life is for me right now, but some days it is overwhelming. There isn't often a sense of completion in my daily tasks because they are never REALLY complete. And I know, someday they will be gone and I will miss this. I know that's true, although I HATE when people say it. Even though I know I will miss it...I will miss the little socks and the towels all over the bathroom floor. I will miss the bikes on the grass and the boogers on the wall (well, maybe not those). But although I know I will miss this, some days I am so done. Today was that day.

Spring Arts Night & Awards Assembly

Monday, May 23rd-

Picnic lunch
My kids have the best dad. Today I have been feeling AWFUL! I am pretty sure it is severe allergies. I had an awful night and made myself go to the gym but by the end of my workout I felt horrible. We came home and I let the girls watch cartoons while I had a shower and then laid down for a short nap. Silas came home for lunch while I was lying down and he got the girls some lunch and even better--a picnic lunch!

After lunch we headed to the school for the Choir Concert. They did the same concert later in the evening at Spring Arts Night but I'm glad we were able to come in the afternoon because we had better seats and I was able to record a little bit of one of the songs. It was really a great concert and all three boys were SO animated and into the songs.

In the evening we were back at the school for Spring Arts Night. It is mass chaos and was especially stressful with Moody Molly but the kids did really well and I was very happy with their performances. I am trying not to lose it over the fact that Cleod will be in middle school next year. :(

Tuesday, May 24th-

So what I have is definitely allergies... but today was just a little better. This morning was a blur and I ended up letting Molly play the computer (which she really has only done a few times) while Cora played the tablet. Molly ended up playing a few games without any help. It was kind of a big deal.
Molly can officially use the mouse on her own
Around 10am the girls and I went to the school (AGAIN) for the end of the year Awards Assembly. We went because Cleod earned the Patriot Award along with a handful of other 5th graders. It's a super hard thing to earn and he worked really hard. They had to memorize the Gettysburg Address, the Declaration of Independence, know all 50 states and all the Presidents in order, and MORE.  The Mayor even came and presented it to the kids. It was pretty cool.

Cleod the Patriot!

Ryan also received a certificate for participating in a writing contest earlier this year that was sponsored by the Sons of Utah Pioneers.
Silas came home early because he went early to do a training this morning and he spent a couple hours of his evening watching Molly and the other kids playing outside. I went on a errand and when I came back he was wearing Molly's blue hat. He is so great and makes me laugh!

Remember how this guy is so great?!
