As I was watching the play Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on Friday, I realized something I should have really thought of before. I know the story and am grateful for the work he did and for the blessing we receive due to his righteousness. I know he had some hardships. I know that he was sold by his siblings who lied to their father about it and that he was a slave. I know that he was accused wrongfully and put into prison. I know these parts of the story, but it took me watching a teenager sing with passion to realize that he was a person with feelings and failures. The Lord promised him amazing things and then he spent years in a life full of hardship before any of those promises started to be seen.
I think we are starting to feel the same way with answers we are seeking. We want to know if what the Brethren are saying is true. We ask, and then we don't get the answer! What is that about? We pray for health and we don't get better!?
For months I have been asking in prayer for the Lord to bless me with the Spirit in moments that I am upset or frustrated so that I can remember to stop and think and change my reaction. I didn't think there was anything wrong with that prayer but after waiting for it to happen, I started to get frustrated. I was feeling alone. Why wasn't the Lord providing what I needed right in the moment I needed it the most?
First of all, I have realized that sometimes we ask the wrong question. Last week I started asking for the ability to see the Lord's hand in my life. I had realized that He doesn't leave me alone just because I wasn't having some manifestation right in the heat of the moment when I would be mad at my kids or when things were getting too overwhelming. So as I have asked to notice Him in my life I have literally seen dozens of ways He is blessing me and those around me. It is all over the place. And because I am seeing them, I feel that He is a part of my life and it is easier to feel at peace in the moments that are hard. Amazing!
Back to Joseph... Joseph had some HARD stuff to go through. He must have had moments of despair and loneliness. He must had felt abandoned, not only by his family, but by the Lord at times. His life was anything but easy. I believe that he had to endure these trials to become the amazingly strong leader and father he became.
And what got Joseph out of prison so he could be the leader and help Egypt through the famine? SERVICE. Joseph helped fellow prisoners by interpreting their dreams. He helped others and in turn was given opportunities he would not have had otherwise. If he had mourned and grieved in the corner of his cell, he could have perhaps sat there for the rest of his life.
Our lives are hard. In our time, our hardships will look different than Joseph's. We have great potential-like Joseph-and because of that, we will have difficult trials...HARD STUFF. We will feel betrayed and lonely at times. We might feel this way for a long time.
Life is messy, but it is for a purpose. The Lord had great things in store for us, but we need to work through the mess to get to the point where we see the full rewards He has for us. As we service others like Joseph and look for the Lord's hand in our lives, we can see that we are not actually alone at all.
